A vBulletin CMS? It’s About Freakin Time!

vBulletin released the news that subscribers have been waiting to hear for a very, very long time…the release of a major vBulletin upgrade: 4.0, and more importantly, a vBulletin CMS and blogging platform. Finally, Jelsoft has stepped out of the 1990s and into the web 2.0 mentality by making subscriptions be a one-time only fee, rather than the highway robbery of paying an unreasonable annual fee for software updates.

What this means for you as a current vBulletin customer is that your current license will continue on until it expires, then, you will be able to purchase an owned license without ever having to do so again.

There’s more good news: the dreadful periwinkle & purple home page of vBulletin.com finally looks like a real website from the 21st century. It gives an overview of the two new packages:

  • vBulletin 4.0 Forum: Praise the Lord, vBulletin now has SEO capabilities that include search engine friendly URLs (welcome to 2004!), custom meta data for posts, search engine compliant XML sitemaps, anti duplicate content capabilities, a user interface that has been completely redesigned, a management system for media such as photos, and an improved search function.
  • vBulletin 4.0 Publishing Suite: It has everything listed above from the classic forum, plus of the new CMS’s bells and whistles; namely with blog and article publishing features, new templating features, a custom widget feature (recent articles, users, friends, posts, blogs, section-specific feeds, polls), along with all of the customization and micro-management admin features that all of us obsessive-compulsive webmasters desire.

All I can say is that I’m really excited about this new release of vBulletin…it has inspired me to revisit some of my old forum-only website ideas. Keep in mind, this is no longer just a forum with some cheap little social networking feature anymore — it’s a full-fledged competitor in the CMS market with the security and features you knew and loved of its predecessor.

If you’re wondering what the new vBulletin looks like – feast your eyes on these freakin’ sweet screenies.

Preliminary pricing for vBulletin’s two 4.0 releases ends on Friday, October 30, 2009. Be sure to jump in to save $50 per license on vBulletin CMS Publishing Suite. I’d chalk this CMS up as a “low-to-mid-priced” one, as its regular price is in the ballpark of $285 when not on sale.

  1. All,

I need to renew some domains, actually a lot. They will each come up for renewal the next two months.

Anyway, I have found and tried go daddy coupons but none work. Anyone have a code they use that works?

    thank you

  2. Hi cheetaDut, I’ve been maintaining a running list of Godaddy Coupon Codes on Squidoo – take a look and see if any work for you! I’ve also created sub-pages for certain domain extensions. I can no longer use coupon codes since I joined their discount domain club, which gives me a flat rate.

  3. Hi,

Your review on vbulletin was really impressive. But since you are a great expert (i wandered throughout your website :D ) I want to understand from you about what is the best CMS + Great community management solution. What should I use if I want huge number of authoritative content + user generated content + social networking features.
And of course, Ad holders and other rich media.

    Thanks :)

  5. Hey Shahzad, thanks for visiting! As for the best CMS, I am a hardcore fan of WordPress. If you truly wanted, you could run WordPress + vBulletin (there’s a bridge for the two). Alternately, you could replace WordPress comments with Disqus or Facebook Connect. I personally see no benefit in bridging vBulletin with anything else, since Disqus is pretty solid, and I have been considering to use it here, as well. Other good CMSs include MODx, and Joomla (give the new Joomla a chance, it has really evolved a lot in the past year…it’s still bloated though, in my opinion.)

  6. I signed up for this site some time ago but haven’t been very active. I didn’t really introduced myself personally as I’ve been looking through a lot more than posting .You might have seen me post a couple of times and if you thought who the heck is this person and exactly what is he speaking about . The past few weeks I found myself posting a lot more often and getting more included in the community and so i thought it would be a good time to say a big late hiya to all you participants.

Got Something to Say? I Know You Do!
